Below are the steps involved for you and your coworkers to join CLAC.
1) Membership Cards
Membership cards are filled out and collected by CLAC and submitted directly to the NB Labour and Employment Board (NBLEB). New Brunswick labour law requires CLAC to collect $1.00 from each person when they sign a membership card.
Membership cards are confidential, meaning your employer never sees them.
2) The Vote
If between 40% and 60% of faculty sign membership cards the New Brunswick Labour and Employment Board (NBLEB) will order a secret ballot vote to determine if faculty want to join with CLAC. If more than 60% of faculty sign membership cards, the NBLEB will automatically certify CLAC to represent Crandall’s faculty.
3) Certification
If the application is successful, the NBLEB will issue a formal certification order.
Either party may then give the other notice to commence collective bargaining and the parties are required to bargain in good faith with the objective of achieving a collective agreement.
With union representation, faculty have the legal right to negotiate and vote to ratify their collective agreement. Collective agreements are negotiated with the employer by a bargaining committee made up of elected faculty members as well as CLAC representatives. No dues are paid until a collective agreement is accepted (ratified) by the faculty.
